Reality Hits

From day 1 I've been dying to find out how much this model would cost once it gets printed. I had to resize the scale and convert the pieces in .stl format before uploading them to get some pricing estimates. And here's what I got.....

This part measures 4cm wide and costs $12-$16 with the FD/FUD material. The price will go down once I hollow out the area circled in red. I will also reduce the wall thickness down to 1mm because at the moment they average from 1.5mm to 2mm.

A couple more parts and it's nearly reaching the $40 mark. I'm considering using other materials like the WSF-polished for less detailed parts to lower the cost.

  1. Cool work as always. I look forward to seeing how the finished part turns out.

  2. I hope you get into 3D printing so we can trade...

  3. That would be cool. I was actually working on a CR-69 mesh a while back, thinking of using the mesh as reference to scratch the AC. And the prospect of coming up with something I could offer as trade for access to the meshes and parts you've come up with has always been appealing as well. :)
I've been kind of resistant to the whole 3-D printing thing - it's a bit costly and I also don't want to abandon my efforts to get better at scratch-building... And I kind of feel like that's what would happen if I started to focus on making meshes for printing. Though I was sorely tempted for a while to get a Reprap machine or something similar to do at least simple, crude prints at home. Considering what I want to do with AC models I probably shouldn't be so picky about my methods for fabricating parts. I can't go on letting year after year slip away with no substantial progress on my AC kits - not if I want to ever finish some of the projects I have in mind...
BTW, are you getting AC5? I decided to throw caution to the wind and get the Japanese version despite my Japanese skills not being quite up to the task of effective team online play... No idea how that's gonna work out. And I don't know that I really have time for a new game right now anyway... But it's AC, so I just jumped in and bought it. :)

  4. What really draws me into 3D printing is mainly getting symmetry and I also don't have a suitable work area for any modeling projects. But I don't see it replacing old school srach building any time soon. It can still be a 50/50-ish process if you want it to be. Like if you want to keep the costs down you'll probably just want to print the outer shell and just do the extra stuff on your own.

You seem to be more exited in AC5 than I do. I'll have to wait for reviews before I get a copy. I found it hard getting into the AC4 games despite having better customization and piloting mechanics. I guess it was the lack of any serious energy management and heating and part breaking that's why I couldn't take the game seriously. I hope AC5 doesn't end up that way.

  5. Yeah, I don't entirely know what to expect of AC5. I'm hoping for the best, though. :) I kind of like the fact that ACs are smaller but as with AC4 I'm not so crazy about the designs... I like the team play aspect, though. I like the idea of the AC world having a little more of a persistent state that's affected by the outcome of team missions. I like that multiplayer counts for something, and has some specific goals instead of just being a free-for-all.
I haven't played AC4 much. I've been meaning to get back to it sometime, at least give the games a play-through.
I am really wary of any kind of reviews of anything these days. There have been times that I've trusted reviewers' opinions (usually the negative ones) and been disappointed that I didn't give the thing a fair chance as a result.
So, I don't know... AC5 could suck, but I'm hoping for the best I guess. :)

  6. There's a japanese demo coming out on the 19th on the japanese psn(not sure about the xbox). I've read that there's people already creating japanese accounts to get their hands on the demo. You might wanna try that if your'e on the psn.

  7. I skipped the demo and dove right in with the full game... I'm still getting the hang of it but it seems like good times.
